Inclusive Hiring

Inclusive Hiring Guide

(PDF) A set of recommendations for conducting a faculty hire put together by the 2020-2021 committee. We highly encourage all members of hiring committees to be familiar with these guidelines and the procedures below, as promoting the inclusivity and excellence of our department hires is in the interest of all department members.

Hiring Committees, Diversity Liaisons, and IDEA Committee

Currently, the CLAS Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion asks that the Department Diversity Liaisons serve as equity advisors to hiring committees within their department. To provide support to the Liaison (especially necessary when multiple hires are running at the same time), we highly recommend that hiring committees also select an internal member to act as a second equity advisor and contact person responsible for facilitating communications with the CLAS Diversity Liaison, as well as our department IDEA Committee. Actions of this internal equity advisor might include, but are not limited to:

  • Initiating e-mail communications between IDEA Committee, the CLAS Diversity Liaison, and the hiring committee at the beginning of the search process to seek resources and get input on the process.
  • Distributing the resources on this page to the rest of the hiring committee for shared committee perusal.
  • Reminding the committee during candidate evaluations what practices are recommended to maintain an inclusive search.
  • Suggesting that the hiring committee use a rubric for evaluating potential candidates.

However, we hope that all members of hiring committees will make themselves familiar with these resources early within the hiring process and make it a priority to conduct an inclusive hire, as diversifying the department and addressing historic under-representation is a community effort.

We recommend that hiring committees read these resources and start a discussion about their approach to an inclusive hire before or during the drafting of the job ad and return to the topic regularly during the hiring process.
